Which is faster - light or sound?
Blurring the boundaries in our perception, the work attempts to test how well we can discern the speed of stimuli. Drawing from scenarios where speed directs experience, impulse explores the glitches in our experience of moving sound and light. The installation orchestrates sequences of sonic and visual pulses that challenge the stimulus rate, intended to disrupt our senses and expectation.
Referencing scenes where speed is a parameter, Impulse features 4 compositions of sound and light that play with different tempos and break momentum:
Track 1 - Circuit
Noise and glitches accelerate and weave through one another, as the lights accelerate and drift in a high- intensity race.
Track 2 - Bullet train
Rushing soundscape suggests a train departing and entering a tunnel, with light and sonic elements sweeping rapidly past its passengers.
Track 3 - Game start
Two players begin in sync. As they compete, the sequence jitters and breaks into erratic patterns.
Track 4 - Neurons
A soundscape evokes the firing of electrical impulses through a network of neurons, as random flashes of signals travel through space.
About the Artist(s)
Louis Quek is a sound artist who investigates the interplay between sound, space, and perception. Informed by a phenomenological approach, he examines the ephemeral and transformative nature of sound as a bridge between the senses. Through evolving textures, fractured rhythms, and algorithmic sequences, he creates immersive sonic experiences that invite listeners to reimagine their relationship with their surroundings and inner worlds. His work intertwines the material and the metaphysical, unfolding as a singular, contemplative auditory entity.

Incorporating technology with different modalities, her multi-sensory works manipulate the physical and intangible to provide a deeper understanding of spatial constructs and perceptual experience.
