DESCRIPTION
Wan Hai Hotel: Singapore Strait marks the second appearance of the Wan Hai Hotel, a recurring exhibition project that resurfaces across maritime geographies, each time reconstituting a speculative 'hotel' as a site for thinking about the ocean, borders, and the waters we depend upon. Presented during Singapore Art Week 2026, this iteration transformed The Warehouse Hotel into a stage for generative fabulations, activating its reception, lounge, bar, study, restaurant and marginal spaces across twelve days.
Curated by X Zhu-Nowell, the exhibition brought together twenty artists, from around Southeast Asia and across the Archipelago, whose practices engage with tides, migratory routes, maritime infrastructures, and the movement of bodies across power. Working across installation, performance, conversation and sonic intervention, the exhibition asked how kinship, longing and endurance persist against enclosure, and how bodies navigate the currents of survival, desire and resistance.
Set within a district historically shaped by boat workers, secret societies and red-light economies, the project entered a site already layered with histories of labour and intimacy, transforming The Warehouse Hotel's architecture of regulated hospitality into a speculative space for collective rehearsal and interruption.
Organised by ART SG and Rockbund Art Museum, the project was supported by the National Arts Council, Singapore Tourism Board and ROCKBUND.
Art Outreach served as project manager for Wan Hai Hotel: Singapore Strait, overseeing the full scope of operational delivery — from workflow planning, budgeting and artist agreements, to installation, programming management, opening reception coordination and venue relationship management. The engagement reflects Art Outreach's role as a trusted arts intermediary in Singapore, enabling ambitious, multidisciplinary exhibition projects to be realised with rigour and care, and ensuring that complex international presentations can take root meaningfully in the local context.
