DESCRIPTION
Traces Beneath is the second edition of Past Forward, an ongoing collaboration between Bank of Singapore and Art Outreach Singapore, presented at Bank of Singapore Centre Lobby. The showcase features a selection of screen-printed works alongside two special commissions created for the space, offering an overview of the practice of Singaporean artist Nathan Tan.
Rooted in ongoing fieldwork around Singapore's freshwater environments, Tan's work draws on ornamental fishkeeping, urban waterways and overlooked forest spaces to navigate the delicate balance between human intervention and natural ecosystems. In Traces Beneath, screen-printed visuals are transferred onto thin plywood — a process that mirrors how natural materials are reshaped into unnatural forms, reflecting on the aesthetic and ecological tensions that emerge when human systems intersect with natural ones. Through mirrored surfaces and intricately laser-cut forms, the works invite viewers to look more closely at what often lies beneath the surface of Singapore's freshwater landscapes and their essential role in sustaining life beyond our own.
Art Outreach contributed to Traces Beneath through artist recommendation and support in realising the presentation, bringing curatorial knowledge and operational experience to the project.
