DESCRIPTION
Alliance marks the first Southeast Asian solo exhibition by Berlin and Wuyi-based artist Shuang Li, presented by Kim Association in Singapore during Singapore Art Week 2026. The exhibition features a newly commissioned video installation developed with architect Luis Ortega Govela of Office LOG.
Rooted in the American storm-chasing phenomenon, Li's practice repositions storm chasing as a universal metaphor for navigating algorithmic forces and the commodification of lived experience across borders. Her transnational worldview was forged through pirated media and the pre-Great Firewall Chinese internet of the early 2000s — channels through which she absorbed geography, popular culture and language from her teenage home in the Wuyi Mountains, shaping a practice that thinks across non-spaces, extreme weather systems and the erosion of boundaries between physical and virtual life.
The installation takes its title from Alliance, a Nebraska town Li passed through during her storm-chasing journey. The work evokes the sensation of travelling on a high-speed train: perfectly still yet hurtling forward, mirroring a mediated reality in which one can anonymously witness distant disasters in real time.
In Singapore, a city defined by optimised infrastructure and seamless systems, these themes take on particular resonance, probing what forms of presence remain possible within increasingly mediated realities.
Art Outreach provided project management for Alliance, leading the development of the project scope and installation timeline, vendor sourcing and procurement, and on-site coordination and supervision of installation works. The engagement reflects Art Outreach's role as an arts intermediary in Singapore, supporting the realisation of ambitious commissioned works and enabling international artistic practices to be presented with care and precision for local audiences.
