DESCRIPTION
Digging Stars marks Ibrahim Mahama’s first solo exhibition in Singapore, presented by The Pierre Lorinet Collection at Gillman Barracks during Singapore Art Week 2026.
Working across installation, sculpture, photography, drawing and archival research, Mahama’s practice examines the movement of materials, people and histories across time. His works often begin with found or repurposed objects, carrying traces of labour, trade, circulation and use. Through these materials, Mahama reflects on the social, economic and political systems that shape everyday life, drawing attention to histories that are often embedded within the surfaces of things.
Set within the layered environment of Gillman Barracks, Digging Stars brings Mahama’s work into dialogue with a site shaped by changing histories of military use, cultural production and public encounter. The exhibition offers audiences in Singapore a significant opportunity to engage with the artist’s expansive practice, and to consider how materials can hold memory, movement and collective experience.
Presented by The Pierre Lorinet Collection and curated by Edward Mitterrand, the exhibition brings together works that reflect Mahama’s sustained interest in labour, infrastructure, exchange and transformation. Through acts of accumulation, recontextualisation and display, his practice opens up new ways of reading the relationships between material culture and shared histories.
Art Outreach supported the project through exhibition coordination, production planning and project management, working closely with the collection, curator, artist team, venue stakeholders and production partners to realise the presentation. As part of Art Outreach’s broader work in supporting exhibitions, commissions and cultural partnerships, Digging Stars reflects the organisation’s role in enabling ambitious visual arts projects in Singapore and creating opportunities for audiences to encounter significant international artistic practices.
