Perpetual Motion is the seventh edition of Art Encounters, presented by Art Outreach Singapore in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board at Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza from 8 January to 6 February 2022, as part of Singapore Art Week 2022. The programme arrived at the waterfront with an installation of kinetic sculptures by local artist Gerald Leow.

Asking the question "do objects have any meaning without humans?", Perpetual Motion explored the creation of sculpture that finds completion in its interaction with people and its environment. Venturing beyond the containers, Leow erected a series of towering steel columns on the Event Plaza designed to be turned by hand or moved by the wind — a circular motion that expressed the natural state of renewal, the turning of tides, and the way we continually give new meaning to the things we encounter. Inside the containers, drawings, sketches and photographs offered a glimpse into Leow's process, where freed from the material constraints of physical sculpting, a more fluid and subconscious mode of making resides. On weekends throughout the exhibition, Leow was present to demonstrate the making of his maquettes, add to a wireframe installation inside the containers, and engage with visitors directly.

Leow's practice is a material-based exploration between the boundaries of culture and interpretation, drawing on anthropology and indigenous forms. His work has been presented at the Singapore Art Museum, Palais de Tokyo and Art Science Museum, among others.

As organiser and presenting institution, Art Outreach commissioned and produced Perpetual Motion, extending Art Encounters into a bold waterfront setting and reflecting the organisation's commitment to bringing ambitious, site-responsive public art to unexpected locations across Singapore.
