From Gelam to Glam is the second edition of Art Encounters, presented by Art Outreach Singapore in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board at the lawn of the Malay Heritage Centre, Kampong Glam, from 15 February to 7 June 2020. The programme's travelling shipping containers returned with a site-specific black-light drawing installation by local multidisciplinary artist Rizman Putra, held in conjunction with the Malay Heritage Centre's special exhibition Seekor Singa, Seorang Putera dan Sebingkai Cermin: Reflecting and Refracting Singapura.

A respected figure in Singapore's experimental art scene with over a decade of practice spanning visual arts, performance and music, Rizman's work in From Gelam to Glam builds on a sustained exploration of line and mark-making — most recently developed through Chonteng, an immersive installation created during a 2019 residency with Teater Ekamatra, in which he drew across all surfaces of a rehearsal space using automatic drawing over 22 days. For Art Encounters, he expanded this practice into a new medium of UV paint, creating a vibrant black-light installation inspired by the native Gelam tree that gave Kampong Glam its name in the 1820s. Weaving in material culture and ephemera from the adjacent Malay Heritage Centre exhibition, the work pays homage to the precinct's historic roots as a thriving port town and Malay-Arab enclave. By day the installation appears as vivid colour across every surface of the containers; as night falls, it begins to glow — echoing Kampong Glam's daily transition from heritage site to culture hotspot.

As organiser and presenting institution, Art Outreach commissioned and produced From Gelam to Glam, bringing Rizman's experimental practice to public audiences beyond traditional gallery spaces and reflecting the organisation's commitment to embedding art into the rhythms of everyday life across Singapore.
