DESCRIPTION
Art Encounters is a public art initiative presented by Art Outreach Singapore in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board, running from 2020 to 2022 across ten editions. Housed in repurposed shipping containers, the programme functioned as a mobile artist's studio and gallery, travelling to unexpected sites across Singapore and giving the public transparent access to the art-making process.
Conceived to decentralise art appreciation and bring contemporary art beyond traditional gallery spaces into everyday civic life, Art Encounters commissioned artists to create site-specific installations inside the containers, with each edition activating a new location and featuring a new artistic voice. Editions travelled to Orchard Road, where French artist Lionel Sabatté created a series of concrete sculptures; Kampong Glam, where Rizman Putra developed an immersive UV paint installation; Bugis Town, featuring works by Singapore-based British artist Chloë Manasseh; and Little India, where the programme concluded with Synapse Intarsia, an interactive audio-visual installation by AVC — comprising painter Bridget Tay and musician Nazrin Ramlee.
Spanning ten editions and four distinct sites across the island, Art Encounters reflects Art Outreach's role as an arts intermediary committed to expanding access to contemporary art in Singapore. By developing an innovative, travelling format that brought artists and audiences together in unexpected public spaces, the programme demonstrated Art Outreach's capacity to conceive and sustain long-term, community-facing initiatives — building new audiences for the arts and embedding creative encounters into the rhythms of everyday life.
