PENUMBRA
Kelly JIN MEI
Solo Exhibition
28 Aug – 6 Sep 2026, 11am to 7pm
Derived from the words ‘almost shadow’ in Latin, Penumbra refers to a space of partial shadow between total eclipse and full light. Standing in the literal grey area, the observer is neither experiencing total occultation, nor complete illumination. Changes in lighting and position instantly transform its temporary boundary, suggesting that Truth is only a perception in a state of constant flux.
This triptych consists of "Anekanta" (2024), "Vedurnan" (2025) and "Qiwulun" (2026). "Anekanta", the first to be conceived, sets the precedent for how one can view this exhibition—its title in Sanskrit means ‘not one sidedness’—from multiple perspectives.
Following the journey of rice, sago and cassava as the main food staples in Indonesia, Jin Mei borrows the format of Wayang Kulit, blending mythology and history in her interpretation. Alluding to certain periods of Indonesian history from colonisation to occupation, the textiles demonstrate the malleability of mainstream narratives and their tendency to be distorted or manipulated.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a foodcentric event in collaboration with Gravy Baby titled Waroeng Ndeso on 5 September (Saturday) exploring the politics of rice, sago and cassava through taste.

To eat is to participate in systems larger than ourselves.
How closely connected are we to the food that sustains us? What happens when we look beyond what is presented to us? And what do our everyday eating habits reveal about the systems we participate in? Join us on the mat for an afternoon of food, conversation and collective reflection.
Gravy Baby is a culinary practice exploring food as a medium for storytelling, cultural exchange and collective gathering by Carmen Chen.
