Manhole Figures Series

Ng Chai Kim

Solo Exhibition

8 – 18 October 2026, 11am – 7pm

"Manhole Figures Series" is a body of Chinese ink paintings that brings together figurative imagery and impressions of urban surfaces, particularly manhole covers and street textures. Through traditional Chinese ink techniques, I explore human presence, marginality, and memory within contemporary urban environments.

During my artistic research and residencies in Paris, Guangzhou, Teochew, Shantou, Xi’an, and Singapore, I collected impressions from the urban surfaces around me, including manhole covers, door handles, lampposts, and other textured objects. These impressions were later combined with figurative studies of people I encountered in these places.

The "Manhole Figures Series" continues this exploration by bringing the human figure into dialogue with the traces and patterns of the city. Manhole covers, often overlooked and situated beneath our feet, become metaphors for what lies beneath the visible surface of urban life—hidden systems, unnoticed labour, and marginalised lives. The solitary figures within these works suggest states of resilience, vulnerability, displacement, and quiet endurance.

By combining traditional Chinese ink on rice paper with frottage, I seek to connect an ancient artistic language with contemporary urban experience. The tension between the fluidity of ink and the mechanical patterns of urban surfaces creates a dialogue between the organic and the industrial, the personal and the collective, the visible and the concealed.

Through these works, I reflect on how people inhabit, experience, and leave traces within the cities around them, and how seemingly ordinary surfaces can hold memories of place, time, and human presence.

About the Artist(s)

Ng Chai Kim is a distinguished artist with a strong academic background, holding a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, in 2001, and a Diploma in Fine Arts from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, in 1998.

She has actively participated in numerous group exhibitions both locally and internationally, including in Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore. One of her notable works, an untitled installation art piece showcasing ceramic qualities, is part of the Taipei County Yingge Ceramics Museum's private collection.

As a left-hander, Kim pushed her boundaries by practicing calligraphy with her right hand. She has studied under prominent artists such as local Pioneer Artist Mr. Wee Beng Chong for calligraphy and wood carving, and Mr. Lim Kay Hiong for Chinese Ink Painting.

Kim is passionate about travel and sketching the people she encounters. Every year, she visits various art museums, galleries, and artists' workshops across Europe and Asia. With over 25 years of experience in children's art education, Kim has nurtured students who have won numerous awards in art competitions both locally and internationally, including in Singapore, Japan, Poland, the Czech Republic, India, and Slovenia. Her students' achievements have also been featured on Singapore's local TV program, Tuesday Report.
