A Home/A Dwelling
This exhibition posits Singapore as a city of ghosts, where spectres of the past continue to affect the present and the living. What once held is quickly gone; negotiations between changing environments, domestic graveyards and lost landscapes leave a growing tumour of feelings with nowhere to go. These feelings reappear most acutely not in the presence but in the absence of things: the spot of land where the big old tree was, the childhood mall that vanished, the silences of a family that are emotionally bound, still, by these walls. Flickers of affect flash between our reality and the emotional ether. If we were to pause, perhaps, and consider the barrenness left in the wake of what once was or could be, the boundary between a linear then/now might begin to dissipate. Be it through sentiments of mourning, curiosity, or joyous re-imagination, what is important are the dialogues that occur when we meet these spectres face-to-face.
About the Artist(s)
Xin Lee (b. 2000) is a multi-disciplinary artist who utilises textiles, performance and sculpture, to visualise the hidden socio- political currents and forces that define us. Situating herself as both an observer and participant of urban living, she views craft as a tool for individuals to intervene into their environment.
Anna Du Toit (b. 2001) is a maker based in Singapore. Her work is inspired by her surroundings, focusing on unusual details and developing them into a new perspective. Her pieces range from detailed ballpoint drawings to larger sculptures that explore themes of home and identity, ultimately offering a surreal look at her personal connection to care.
As an artist, writer and researcher, Velda Phua (b. 2001) is interested in the investigative potentials of the jarring, absurd and maladapted. Her research-practice is an ever- growing collection of malfunctions, regarding them as inevitable explosions under hierarchies of power.
