Another Woman 1, 1996

Photographic print

112 x 127 cm

Amanda Heng's introspective series of photographs from 1996 and 1997 portrays her mother and herself in moments of tenderness or distance, examining the nuanced connection between generations of women who grew up in strictly patriarchal households. In this particular photograph, Heng and her mother seemingly face each other but with their arms folded and bodies tilted away, conveying a dialogue that transcends words. Other photographs in the series depict Heng and her mother in an embrace, or facing each other naked, in an attempt to capture the complex emotional bonds between them. The series becomes a poignant reflection on the intricacies of familial relationships, identity, and the shared experiences of women navigating the constraints of traditional structures.
