Yanyun Chen, Artist
Dr Yanyun Chen (born 1986, Singapore) is an artist who runs a charcoal-based drawing, animation and installation practice. Her works delve into the aesthetic, cultural and technological inheritances on one’s body and unravels fictional and philosophical notions of embodiment. She researches cultural wounds, dowry traditions, hereditary scars, philosophies of nudities, and etymology.
Chen graduated from the European Graduate School Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought PhD programme in 2018, the Communications MA programme in 2014, and Nanyang Technological University School of Art Design and Media Digital Animation programme in 2009. She is currently the Arts Practice Coordinator for the Humanities division of Yale-NUS College in Singapore, the founder of illustration and animation studio Piplatchka, and the managing partner of publishing house Delere Press LLP.
Her works have been exhibited in Singapore, Korea, Macau, Belarus, and Czech Republic. Selected exhibitions include Stories of a Woman Her Dowry (Singapore, 2019), The scars that write us (Singapore, 2018), and Flower Flights (Singapore, 2018).
She was the recipient of the Singapore Art Museum President’s Young Talents People’s Choice Award (Singapore, 2018), National Youth Film Awards (Singapore, 2019), Prague International Indie Film Festival (2020), Japan Media Arts Festival (2012) and the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal Award (2009).
Dr Yanyun Chen is currently based in Singapore and represented by Art Porters Gallery.
