This exhibition brings together for the first time a group of important contemporary artworks selected to illustrate the voluntary bridge the Pierre Lorinet Collection has built over the past decade between the founders of Minimalism and some of the most prominent Asian artists from the twenty-first century who have shaped their practice from the history of Modernism and mostly on Asian political or philosophical concepts.
When Pierre Lorinet started his collection in 2012 with a focus on Minimalism, one of the most influential and rigorous movement in the history of contemporary art, he challenged his relationship to art by choosing to find and experience emotions within radicality.
Moving the collection to Singapore a few years later meant opening it to artists with Asian origins who in various ways are or had been influenced by Minimalism.
Chen Zhen, Nam June Paik, Ai Weiwei, Haegue Yang all share a deep education on art history and strong concerns about their contribution not only to contemporary art but also to their respective countries. Their presence in the collection has anticipated the acquisition of a younger generation of Asian artists such as Thai-American artist Korakrit Arunanondchai.

About the artist: Ai Weiwei
Ai Weiwei is a contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist, known for being one of China's most vocal political commentators. His father was imprisoned in a labour camp as a revolutionary enemy, while his family lived in exile under harsh conditions until 1976. After attending the Beijing Film Academy from 1978 to 1981, Ai moved to the United States, temporarily attending Parsons School of Design.
He returned to China in 1993, and was arrested in 2011 for "economic offences". Ai utilises art to challenge China's socio-political structure, manipulating Chinese cultural artefacts to juxtapose the materiality and tradition of the country's imperial history. He has received various accolades, including the Chinese Contemporary Art Award in 2008; Honorary Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts, London in 2011; and the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent in 2012. Among his solo exhibitions are those at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo in 2009; Tate Modern, London in 2010; and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. in 2012.

I have limited space at home, and the works I collect tend to be relatively large and bulky, not always easy to install in our living space. I want the works to get out and be shared. I’m really looking forward to the exhibition.

Meet the Artists
About the Collector
Pierre Lorinet is a non-executive Director of Trafigura Group Pte Ltd and Puma Energy Holdings Pte Ltd. He is also an Independent non-executive Director at Cofco International Limited, Enterprise Singapore as well as with a range of tech start-ups in Singapore and Europe.
He is engaged in philanthropy in Mongolia and across South East Asia with his wife mainly through their family foundation but also as a Non-executive Director of the Trafigura Foundation, The Pioneer Facility Pte Ltd and
Tri-sector Associate Pte Ltd.
Visual Arts have always been of great interest to Pierre.
He has actively contributed to Singapore’s art scene as a member of the National Arts Council from 2015 to 2021.
He is currently the Chairman of the sustain the Arts Fund (stART fund), a NAC initiative designed to catalyse private funding to support the long-term sustainability of small arts organisation and nurture a culture of giving to the arts. In 2022, he joined the Singapore Arts Museum acquisition committee and also became an advisor to ART SG.
Over the years he has been the recipient of the Friends of the Arts, Patron of the Arts and Distinguished Patron of the Arts awards.
Pierre Lorinet has been collecting for over a decade with a focus on sculpture and minimalists. He hopes you will enjoy part of his collection on display.
About the Curator
After studying economics and art history, Edward Mitterrand began his career with the organization of public exhibitions of monumental sculptures for cities including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Vancouver, Kaoshiung, and Luxembourg.
In 2000 in Geneva, with his partner Stéphanie Cramer, he inaugurated their gallery with an exhibition by Jean-Michel Basquiat, before co-creating the following year with two other neighbouring gallery owners the Association du Quartier des Bains, which Edward presided over several times. Across 15 years, Mitterrand + Cramer organised exhibitions inclduing Basquiat, Diego Giacometti, Lalanne; and participated to art fairs around the world such as Fiac, Art Cologne, Arco, Art Brussels, List, among others. In 2008, Mitterrand + Cramer also published collectable designs with some of the most recognized contemporary designers (Tom Dixon, Marteen Baas, Studio Job, Jurgen Bey, Arik Levy, ...), participating to major design fairs such as Design Miami, or the Pad.
Since 2015, still in partnership with Stéphanie, Edward has been advising individuals and wealth management companies on contemporary art, leveraging 20 years of experience and the privileged relationships that he and his partner have forged with the best galleries around the world. In June 2015, the Financial Times supplement “How to Spend It” devoted its cover to Edward Mitterrand and his consulting activity.
Meanwhile Edward, as President and partner of Galerie Mitterrand in Paris, is also running the strategic development of the gallery runned by his father Jean-Gabriel who brought artists such as the Lalanne or Niki de Saint-Phalle at the forefront of the art market.
In July 2015 Edward allowed himself an extra challenge, both professional and personal, by inaugurating with his father a park of contemporary sculptures in the south of France which brings together more than 30 works by emerging and established artists as well as The SilverHouse designed by renowned interior architect India Mahdavi. A few days after this inauguration, the Domaine du Muy was considered by the Wall Street Journal as one of "five of the best sculpture parks in the world" and is now part of the cultural network “Réseau Plein Sud” which groups 64 cultural institutions in the south of France.
